Health Alert: Why Sexually Transmitted Infections Are Reaching Record Levels in Europe

An alarming health situation in Europe
Recent reports published by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) are raising concerns. Bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are increasing rapidly across the European continent, reaching levels not seen in over a decade.

The figures reveal: a surge in cases
The collected data shows a worrying increase in several major diseases. Here are the key figures that illustrate this trend:
- Chlamydia remains the most widespread STI in Europe, with 213,443 cases reported last year.
- Syphilis is following a worrying upward trajectory with 45,577 cases recorded, which represents more than double the previous level.
- Gonorrhea is also experiencing a dramatic increase.

The critical case of gonorrhea
One of the most striking indicators concerns gonorrhea. In 2024, more than 106,000 cases were reported, marking a staggering increase of 303% compared to 2015. This exponential increase places health authorities in a state of emergency.
The warning signs are flashing red for sexual health in Europe.
This resurgence of bacterial infections raises crucial questions about the effectiveness of prevention measures and the management of public health at the European level.
